On October 29, 2026, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) will launch Voices from the Margins of Care: People Living with Noncommunicable Diseases in Asia and Africa, a compendium of patient testimonies from Bangladesh, India and Nigeria via a webinar that puts these realities at the center of the conversation on health policy.  

When Gretchen Burns Bergman testified in California in 2014 for a bill that would let organizations distribute naloxone, someone asked why she wanted to support drug use. 

She was thinking about what a mother might need in her medicine cabinet. 

“Mothers are oftentimes the first responder, right?” she told me during Brave Recovery: The Women Impacted. “So why would I not be able to have it in my medicine cabinet?” 

That question has stayed with me. Gretchen knew the moment she was trying to prepare for. She also knew that the people writing the rules did not necessarily see it the way she did. 

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 29, 2026)- The National Safety Council (NSC) and the Global Health Advocacy Incubator’s Overdose Prevention Initiative (GHAI) applaud the U.S. Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for giving employers practical guidance on responding to an opioid overdose at work. Released on September 24, “Save a Life Day”, during National Recovery Month, the guidance calls on workplaces to keep opioid overdose reversal medication accessible, prepare workers to use it and call 911 when an overdose occurs. 

This August, in Dakar, Senegal, the Pan-African Legal Network on Food & Nutrition (PALNEF) was formally inaugurated. Convened during the Global Health Advocacy Incubator’s (GHAI) Third Pan-African Legal Capacity Strengthening Symposium on Food and Nutrition Governance, the network is now registered in Tanzania as an international legal network, complete with its own constitution and governing structure.

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator’s (GHAI) road safety team joined colleagues and partners from across the injury prevention and road safety community at the 16th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (Safety 2026) in South Africa. 

The conference offered a valuable opportunity for the team to learn from diverse perspectives across the injury prevention field while strengthening connections with organizations and experts working to address road traffic injuries. It was particularly timely as GHAI begins supporting road safety civil society organizations in South Africa through the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS). 

On a field visit to Zambia, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator’s (GHAI) Associate Director of Communications for Health Systems Strengthening, Abel Akara Ticha, together with colleagues from the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ), met Dr. Jacob Sakala, Manager of Zambia’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), in Lusaka.

Ahead of the ceremony, here's a look at what this cohort achieved. 

Over 10 months, GHAI's Advocacy Accelerator strengthened the capacity of 12 civil society organizations (CSOs) from 11 countries across Africa and Asia to influence domestic health financing, combining hands-on learning, expert mentorship and peer exchange. Through capstone projects spanning cardiovascular health, drowning prevention, health security, mental health, road safety and tobacco control, this cohort achieved concrete results.
