Maternal and Reproductive Health

Responsive Image

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) helped to prevent maternal mortality and expand reproductive health access in Tanzania through a targeted advocacy campaign. Our locally led team worked side-by-side with doctors, nurses and other local partners to advocate for funding for a vital maternal health program after the departure of international donors. As a result of this campaign, the national and regional governments committed to additional human resources and sustained funding and support.

This work was supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Our Impact

The government of Tanzania formally committed to continuing the program and laid out maternal health funding priorities for Kigoma in 2019, while the Minister of Health deployed an additional 369 health providers to Kigoma Region, the highest total ever.

Local councils approved additional funding for essential maternal and reproductive health services and directed medical officers to ensure essential health services reach the community.
