Virtual Conference – Facing COVID-19: How Big Food and Big Tobacco Undermined Public Health

On March 2, the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) will host a follow-up webinar on its November report, “Facing Two Pandemics: How Big Food Undermined Public Health in the Era of COVID-19.” The report outlines how “Big Food” industries – multinational food and beverage companies like PepsiCo, Nestlé, and Coca-Cola – took advantage of COVID-19 to promote their unhealthy, ultra-processed products to populations the pandemic made even more vulnerable and susceptible to their deceptive marketing.

The new event will be a great opportunity to learn more about the food and beverage industry’s efforts to aggressively market their products and how it interfered, both directly and indirectly, in healthy food policy efforts. GHAI will share updates on what the food industry has been up to since our report was first released, and will host new speakers from countries like Colombia, Mexico, and the U.S. Our speakers will explain how industry interfered with front-of-package labeling efforts in Mexico and highlight the civil society organizations’ response to the industry’s behaviors in Colombia.

This event will be held as a satellite session of the Consortium of Universities for Public Health (CUGH) annual meeting; this year’s theme is addressing critical gaps in global health and development. Register here to attend and don’t forget to share this with your networks. You will also have the chance to ask our panelists questions during our live Q&A session which starts at 11:30 am eastern time following the panelists’ presentations.
