Marisa Macari, PhD is the Senior Advisor for the Healthy Food Policy Advocacy Fund at the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI). In this role she provides advocacy and technical programmatic support to organizations working to pass legislative and regulatory efforts on healthy food policy in countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. She has extensive research and advocacy experience on topics that include front-of-pack labelling, marketing restrictions, SSB taxes, school food policy, industry interference and food systems governance. Prior to working at the Global Health Advocacy Incubator, Marisa worked at El Poder del Consumidor (Mexico) where she carried out research and advocacy for over a decade as the Coordinator of Nutritional Health Research. Since 2014, she has participated, on behalf of civil society, in international food policy processes, including in the development and negotiation of guidelines both at the Codex Alimentarius (2018-2023) and the UN Committee on World Food Security as a member of the CSIPM Civil Society & Indigenous Peoples´ Mechanism (2016-2021). She has a Masters and PhD in Anthropology with a focus on medical and nutritional anthropology. Her doctoral work explored the political-economic inequalities shaping nutritional health among Mexican migrants in New York City.
