Introductory text goes here. If we go with this concept, I will need to ask Eagle Peak to clone the "Text with Icons" content block so we have a version that's a fixed width. Also, we need to ask them to re-code the template so the description box is not required.

Rwanda

Following recommendations from the GHAI legal review together with further legal drafting assistance, Rwanda issued an Administrative Order that authorized health facilities as registration points. This legal and policy change has the potential to greatly increase the accessibility of civil registration and ultimately increase the registration of births and deaths that occur within a health facility.

Thailand

Following a key recommendation of the GHAI legal review, together with a series of meetings and workshops with inter-departmental agencies highlightling the importance of stillbirth reporting, Thailand Department of Health adopted perinatal reporting guidelines requiring all hospitals (both public and private) to report all stillbirths starting April 2022. This is a critical public health step to recognizing and reducing the incidents of stillbirth.

Cambodia

In July, following 5 years of detailed technical assistance and legal drafting by GHAI legal advisors, Cambodia adopted a law on civil registration, vital statistics and identity management (CRVSID) that establishes an integrated system linking individuals' births and deaths records, identification and residence to a newly created population register. The comprehensive landmark law removes obstacles and disincentives from the process of registering vital events, established a universal right to an ID card for all citizens, and includes important privacy protections for personal data.

India

Following a gender-focused legal review by GHAI, the government of Rajasthan, India committed to facilitate the provision of civil registration services to all members of the community, including LGBTQI individuals. On July 19, the Chief Birth and Death Registrar issued the first birth certificate to a transgender individual.

Maldives

In 2022, we began budget advocacy for CRVS systems in three pilot countries, including Maldives. In August 2023, this program led directly to the Maldives' Ministry of Finance approving the creation of a cadre of local-level civil registrars and committing to creating and funding island-level civil registrars in 2024.
