Episode 2: "Opportunity, Not Charity” Featuring Kelly Lyndgaard

"Addiction really is a story of pain. It's not a story of substance."

Kelly Lyndgaard didn't enter this work because of her own addiction story.

She entered it because one conversation changed how she understood addiction forever.

After hearing a woman describe becoming addicted as a child following trauma and neglect, Kelly stopped seeing addiction as a story about bad choices and started seeing it as a story about pain. She discovered that ending substance use is often only the beginning of recovery. Women leaving treatment frequently return to the same barriers that existed before: unemployment, financial instability, isolation and stigma.

That realization led her to build Unshattered, a social enterprise that employs women in recovery and helps them rebuild their lives through meaningful work.

Her story challenges a question many recovery conversations ignore:

What happens after treatment ends?

Because healing requires more than sobriety. It requires purpose, belonging, opportunity and economic stability.

Recovery doesn't end when treatment ends.

Unshattered

Unshattered is a nonprofit social enterprise employing women in recovery to create premium handbags and accessories from reclaimed materials.

More than a workplace, Unshattered functions as a community built around healing, workforce development and long-term recovery. Its model demonstrates that employment isn't simply an outcome of recovery. It can be a critical part of recovery itself.

About Brave Recovery: The Women Impacted

Twelve women. Twelve stories. One challenge to everything we think we know about addiction, recovery, prevention, grief and hope.

From mothers and advocates to researchers, journalists, counselors, authors and community leaders, each woman featured in Brave Recovery: The Women Impacted reveals a deeper truth: recovery is not simply about individual choices. It is about whether families, communities and systems create the conditions that allow people to heal.

These stories are not only about survival.

They are about what becomes possible when people are seen, supported and given the opportunity to reclaim their futures.
